“You” Star Penn Badgley Calls Out Netflix’s Love Affair With Serial Killers: “It’s Weird, Man.”

“You” Star Penn Badgley Calls Out Netflix’s Love Affair With
Serial Killers: “It’s Weird, Man.”

Penn Badgley, who plays the overly sexualized Joe Goldberg in everyone’s favorite Netflix series You, is over people crushing hard on serial killers.

“You need to look at that, inside,” Badgley said in a Feb 14 interview with Entertainment Tonight when questioned about people’s attraction to serial killers.

For Badgley, the difference is that his character Joe Goldberg (a serial killer and stalker) is fictional, while Jeffrey Dahmer, who Evans Peters portrayed in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Ted Bundy, who Zac Effron played in Netflix’s 2021 film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, are very real serial killers with real-life victims.

“Now, to be fair, with our show, you’re meant to fall in love with him. That’s on us. But Ted Bundy? That’s on you! Jeffrey Dahmer? That is on you – that is on Netflix. That is squarely on the shoulders of Netflix. I don’t have answers at this point. I do, but they’re long and… yeah, it’s weird, man,” he said.

This is a familiar refrain: Badgley has previously voiced his concerns over people’s over-sexualization of Joe. And while he personally admits Joe is hot, the fact that he goes around stalking and murdering people isn’t meant to be a turn-on. “You’re supposed to see past my face to the crazy shit,” he tweeted in 2021.

In a “You” promotional video, Badgley also called Joe Goldberg “one of the worst people ever” and requested fans to stop justifying his actions. “Don’t aspire to be like him. Don’t defend him, ever. He doesn’t need it.”

The fact that ppl even consider Dahmer to be attractive is gut wrenching. With Joe, they’ve written him to make you fall in love with him, but Dahmer, yeh let’s idolise an actual killer and have ppl attracted to him? Nahh I’m good mate

Jeffrey Damher was unconventionally attractive to some people. There was no issue with casting Evan Peters who is also good looking. They changed his appearance to make him look less attractive which works for Jeffrey Dahmer in real life. Penn needs to shut it

Difference is Joe Goldberg is fictional. With You, people don’t have to take it as seriously whereas the Dahmer show revisits Dahmer’s horrific crimes, gives him spotlight and adds to the heartache of the families of Dahmer’s victims.

I didn’t find Evan as attractive playing Jeffrey so idk what he’s talking about. He look like a geek to me and a weirdo. So nah. But even peters as Tate Langdon yessss ???

we know that jeffrey was a decent looking guy, just like ted bundy so the actors that played them would be good looking too,but imo the whole point is that they shouldnt be series made about serial killers, especiall when the familie of the victims hugely disagree with this

Netflix don’t care one bit about the victims or their families etc whatever crap they say it’s only about money, subscriptions & ratings pic.twitter.com/UFncv7T4Zx

This is out of context. In the interview he said it in a joking manner. He wasn’t “calling them out”.

A serial killer that he has been very vocal about hating. Like he genuinely is weirded out by people finding his character hot and has been vocal about how Joe needs to die… I don’t know what kind of point you’re trying to make.

— Miles (@Miles49336131) February 13, 2023

Classic white guy saying what he thinks we want to hear to collect “woke points” situation.

Unfortunately for him I judge people on their actions not their words.

Penn Badgley “calling out” Dahmer because Evan Peters is attractive is hilarious. Like, bruh, you play a good-looking psycho, too.

— ????????? ????? (@Diablozsz) February 14, 2023

And yeah, I get it: Jeffrey Dahmer was real. But you have no authority to “call out” anyone for glamorizing abuse, especially seeing as YOU is just serial-killer Twilight.

— ????????? ????? (@Diablozsz) February 14, 2023

But that was part of what made dahmer get his victims, he was kind of an attractive white man.

— Edwin.Pineda.P (@Eddypp) February 13, 2023

I meannnn Joe did stalk and kill Beck and y’all were here for it cuz of that post she made about mac and cheese ?

— ???? ❀ (@lorynosaurus) February 13, 2023

yeah blame netflix for making a informative series, and not fragile people not beeing able to control themselves, ya’ll just keep getting sadder

— KP (@katysprismlove) February 13, 2023

That is not at all the purpose of the show. Downfall was not a movie that was supposed to make you fall in love with Hitler. These shows take some creative liberties while also painting a semi-true story of the crime. If you’re falling in love with dahmer that is on you.

Hmm. I don’t think making you fall in love with a fictional murderer is much better. Especially when real people have been inspired by fictional murderers to kill. pic.twitter.com/iOwKoBidd4

Earlier this month, the former Gossip Girl star also sat down with Stitcher Studios’ Podcrushed to discuss the hit series’ fourth season, which recently premiered on Netflix.

Badgley revealed that he had a conversation with the Showrunner Sera Gamble, asking her to film fewer sex scenes in You Season 4.

“I asked Sera Gamble, {the creator}, ‘Can I just do no more intimacy scenes?’ This was actually a decision that I made before I took the show. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it publicly, but one of the main things is, ‘Do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always {the} romantic lead?” Badgley said.

He continued:

“It got to a point where {I thought}, ‘I don’t want to do that,’ so I said to Sera, like, “My desire would be zero {intimate scenes}, to go from 100 to zero.”
