IN THIS POST:

You’ve probably heard of “hygge,” though you probably also can’t pronounce it, like me, lol. The Danish word and practice dates back to around 1800, and it’s the ultimate in COZY. And I don’t know about you but that is MY VIBE rn.

What is a hygge lifestyle?

The Danish term “hygge” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017, after it gained worldwide popularity following the release of the first annual World Happiness Report in 2012. Taking into account more than just the economic state of a country, the World Happiness Report incorporates less tangible, trackable perceptions like overall well-being.

Denmark has consistently ranked in the top 3 countries of the report, and the idea of “hygge” exploded under the pretense that it might be part of the reason that Danish people are happier.

Denmark itself defines hygge as being about “taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about—or even by yourself—to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures.”

What are examples of hygge?

Good question. One Danish outlet explains: “Hygge is often about informal time together with family or close friends. Typically, the setting is at home or another quiet location, or perhaps a picnic during the summer months. It usually involves sharing a meal and wine or beer, or hot chocolate and a bowl of candy if children are included. There is no agenda. You celebrate the small joys of life, or maybe discuss deeper topics. It is an opportunity to unwind and take things slow.”

It seems like it’s a bit hard to nail down, but to me, it means the opposite of getting caught up in life, taking time to pause and lean into the COZY. So besides reading bedtime stories, enjoying afternoon snacks and playing Telestrations with my kids, here’s how I’m folding hygge into my everyday life.

5 tips for living hygge right now

A woman reads while wearing a neck pillow.Whispering Willow Neck Wrap.
Whispering Willow Neck Wrap$38

Soft, 100% cotton flannel filled with organic lavender flowers and organic flax seed.

It’s no secret that I’m on a personal neck-pain-relief journey. Part of the pain is tech neck and part of it is from an accident I was in over 20 years ago, but regardless, it’s constant, gnawing and bothersome. Soooo I’m on a, what feels like lifelong, mission to try and get me back to balanced.

I’ve tried weekly massages, diligent chiropractic care, dry needling, physical therapy, stability and postural muscle weight lifting, Dennerolls and at home massage tools, acupuncture, traction…I’ve gotten MRIs and X-rays and I’ve tried all the pillows—all in the name of trying to find long-lasting relief.

Some things get me closer than others but all of this to say, if there is one thing I know for sure, it’s what feels good on my neck. The latest? Whispering Willow’s Lavender Neck Wrap.

I got this as a sample in the mail last fall and didn’t think much of it. I’ve heard of rice or bean filled pads like this that you can heat or cool so the concept wasn’t new to me. But as I was slogging through the holiday season doing all the things, I took it out, heated it and wrapped it around my neck—and I legit heard angels sing.

This wrap really hits you from several different angles. First, the lavender scent is intoxicating and super calming. It’s so fresh and potent, if you close your eyes, it really transports you to a place of calm.

Second, the length of it is generous and it covers a large amount of body space and it stays put when you drape it over your shoulders (no need for readjusting or fidgeting).

Third, the weight of it combined with the heat just makes your shoulders and neck melt.

Plus I love that it’s made super thoughtfully. The outside is made with 100% cotton flannel and it’s filled with organic lavender flowers and organic flax seed.

From the calming lavender to the melting shoulders to the pause to take it all in—it’s all a v. hygge-esque MOMENT.

Pro tip: Keep this in your bedside drawer so you can enjoy the beautiful lavender scent that will naturally grace your bedroom too.

A woman wearing cozy earth pajamas smiles.Cozy Earth Short Sleeve Bamboo PJs in Blush.
Cozy Earth Short Sleeve Bamboo PJs$165

Eco friendly 95% Viscose from Bamboo, 5% spandex.

I’m a very “jammies = relax time” type of girl. Meaning at the end of the day it’s clothes off, makeup off and jammies ON whether that’s 4pm or 9pm, doesn’t matter. It’s my cozy habit and I’m sticking to it. The only problem is, it’s more of a routine rather than a moment. And I wanted it to be more of a moment.

So, I picked up this Short Sleeve Bamboo pajama set from Cozy Earth in blush because I like that classic pj look (and these are made responsibly from regenerative bamboo). Plus, if you’ve tried anything from Cozy Earth, you KNOW they check that COMFORT box. Super stylish. Super cozy. Super feel good.

So now I put my jammies on and that cozy hygge life ensues.

Leena & Lu Pima Short Robe$98

Environmentally friendly, socially responsible, fair trade and committed to the slow fashion movement.

This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about Leena & Lu and it won’t be the last. Leena & Lu founders (and sisters) Ofelia and Kathya are both from Peru and they use organic Peruvian Pima cotton for their entire line. Ofelia runs operations in Atlanta, GA, while her sister Kathya manages production from Peru.

I’ve tried most of their line and I really like it but I’m obsessed with their latest drop: the Pima Short Robe. Above all else, it’s super flattering with a low v-neck and an attached tie at the waist. My pick in this in black, but I’m a girl who wears black ALWAYS, so I’m biased. Also love the three-quarter sleeve, which is easy to move in and doesn’t get wet when I wash my face.

And last, the weight is PERFECTO. Lightweight enough that I can move around easily and I’m not sweating when I’m drying my hair. But sturdy enough that I feel like I’m wearing something.
Sometimes I wear it a little bit too long just because I don’t want the moment to pass. You can read my full review of this brand here.

There is no hygge moment like in a cozy bed with cozy sheets and cozy pajamas, a hot drink on your bedside table and you devouring a good book. Amirite?!

I’ve been on a mission to find the best sheets for the past decade and I’m here to say I finally found them in Coyuchi’s Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets. But my sheet preference is very specific so before you try these, let me tell you what I like in a sheet.

But actually, maybe it’s easier to start out with what I hate, lol. Texture is a big one and I hate anything silky or smooth. I also hate anything that is not taut and doesn’t remain in place, like jersey sheets that stretch all about? NO!

I hate anything hot or heat retaining like flannel and other non-breathable materials. I hate sheets that are see-through. I also hate sheets that don’t fit right with seams that are off or where the ends curl up. No, no, no, no and NO.

So what do I actually like? Come to find out, I LOVE a percale sheet. This is a sheet that is cool, crisp and a little textured (like scratchy, but in a cozy, ahem HYGGE, way…not in a sandpaper way). This specific sheet set stands out to me too because the sheets are actually super breathable, keeping me warm when I’m cool and cool when I get warm.

I’ve tried both the Coyuchi crinkled percale sheets and the 300 thread count percale sheets and I like the crinkled ones better. They have more texture and feel more cozy / broken in to me. I love these so much I got TWO pairs for our king bed and a pair for my parents for the holidays. (Gotta spread the cozy, cool, crisp sheet love—it’s a MOMENT!)

Organifi Gold$79.45

I’ll choose a hot drink over a cold drink all day long. Even in the summer, it’s hot coffee over iced. It just makes me feel so good. That warm feeling in my throat, the heat in my hands, the smell…gah. So relaxing. The only problem is I love that cozy feeling but I don’t want a coffee at 7pm or even 3pm. So instead I’ll do a tea, a cup of warm water and lemon…a hot toddy?…Organifi’s Gold.

Organifi makes a powder they call Gold that you can add to either hot water or cold water (or milk) and it’s basically like a turmeric latte, but STACKED. It has acacia, coconut, cinnamon bark, ginger root and black pepper, which Organifi says helps with digestion. And it has turmeric, lemon balm, turkey tail mushroom, magnesium and reishi mushroom, which Organifi says helps with recovery.

It’s spicy, complex, sweet (monk fruit) and bold, which if that’s you, then perf. But if you like something a little less potent, you just add less powder. It’s the GOLD-ilocks of hot bevs!

Organifi has chosen these specific superfoods to help with overall relaxation. And I can’t think of a better way to live my best hygge life than with a mug of this in my paws. And this isn’t the first time I’ve talked about them. Check out how their green juice stacks up to the rest here
