7 (PLUS 1) Great Sulfate-Free Shampoos for Your Naturally Curly Hair

by Jacqueline Samarroo

There are plenty of ways to care for your curls, coils, and kinks to keep them looking luscious, strong, and healthy. One thing that’s often recommended is to use sulfate-free shampoos as part of your natural hair care routine. And, it’s pretty good advice!

Why go sulfate-free?

When it comes to natural hair care products, curly girls often see “sulfate” as a really bad word. The thing with sulfates is that they are good at deep cleaning but they strip hair of its natural oils. The effect is even worse on curly hair.

Black hair comes in a wide variety of gorgeous textures. Thanks to the shape of its follicles and how its keratin proteins bond, however, it is naturally drier and more fragile than straight hair. It needs those natural oils to keep it hydrated, moisturized, and strong.

Good choices of sulfate-free shampoo for curly haircare will have hydrating and moisturizing ingredients to deliver water into cells and help lock in that moisture. Look for ones with butters (such as cocoa butter and mango butter); natural oils (such as coconut oil and avocado oil); and glycerin (sometimes called glycerol).
